Module 2 Reflection 1

Reflection 2-1

Which pillar most resonates with you to mitigate one or more of these root causes? Why did you choose this pillar? How do you think implementing this pillar will address the identified problem/root causes?

  1. The student agency and engagement pillar gives the students ownership of their own learning, which will assist in creating lifelong learners. The teacher is then there as someone to support the students in their learning. It takes technology from just being something to "use" to a tool that they can use to learn. Every student is reached at his/her individual level and are able to work at their own pace. This in turn gives the ownership of success to the students.

In a traditional classroom, the teacher is teaching all the students at one level and expecting all the students to be successful. We do not have "cookie cutter" students and therefore, not all students are able to learn in the same way. When children are made to feel safe in their environment they will be able to take risks they would not normally take in a traditional classroom. Meeting each of the students at their independent level allows the students to make progress at their own level and to feel good about themselves.
I feel as a teacher I would prefer to be a teacher who teaches students to want to learn not only while they are in my class, but for a life time.

    1. I agree! We talk about creating life-long learners and giving the students agency is how we do that! If we can build that capacity in our students at elementary and convince secondary to keep that ball rolling, I think our secondary students will find greater relevance in what they are learning and will have greater college and career readiness!

  2. The pillar that most resonated with me, is pillar 4 student agency. Looking at our root causes, this pillar seems that it would move away from teacher centered, whole group lessons, to a student centered, student paced approach, which is a positive step in mitigating the root causes.

I believe that when this pillar is implemented and students are learning at their own pace, they will begin to internalize the content and it won't be so quickly forgotten, as it might be if the information was delivered in a traditional way. Student assessments, such as DCAs, STAAR Ready, and STAAR percentages should increase when all pillars, but especially pillar 4, is correctly implemented.

    1. I have seen this in classrooms using a blended model. Last year, a 4th grade SS teacher told me that because students were using a playlist model and had the opportunity to pause, rewind and rewatch video content as they needed when completing an assignment, they were retaining much more content . She also found she reclaimed time because she was not having to go back and repeat instructions or reteach content as much! Add into this students having access to and understanding of their data and personal goal setting and you have opportunities for students to drive their own growth!

  3. PILLAR 2-Transparency in Learning. I feel this Pillar is valuable since it helps the students know where they are in their studies, causes them to be accountable, and motivates them to "help themselves". I feel teaching the students to check their data is not only valuable today, but is a valuable life skill. The students today will be relying more and more on technology in the future and this will set them up to use it as a tool to assist themselves in setting realistic goals and being able to meet them. -Patti McCormick

  4. I'm so glad you said this- I have found that students really want to know where they are in their progress and when they know and have the ability to track it I think it has a profound impact on their achievement levels. The other part of this is not only giving them access to the data but helping them understand how to interpret it and use it to improve.

  5. Transparency for the students is so important. They can see where they are and where they want to go by tracking their progress.

Reflection 1-1 How is Blended learning different from a technology-rich environment? Why does this difference matter? In other words, what danger is there, if any, in confusing the terms? Post your response below.

Module 3 Reflection

Your "Apply" task was to create a digital assessment tool with students and analyze the results to determine who needed further instruction and who was ready to move on. Tell about the assessment you created and how it informed your next steps for instruction. What might you do differently?
