Reflection 2-2

After reviewing the Robertson Pillars and strategies, what are the top 3 questions you have you would like to discuss as a team?

  1. How do you ensure that all your students make it to the end of a unit on time, if BL is student paced? I know there are tools/strategies out there!

    1. Great question and one that is a priority for many people! You have to set check points. Although it is self paced most teachers use a timeline. A first grade teacher I worked with last year used a grid-like check list. Students have to complete a certain amount of the activities each week. They also had a "may do" list of optional items they could choose from if they completed their "must dos" which added incentives. Another tool teachers use is goal setting. This can be very simple to start out but having students set goals for what they will complete in a time frame and at what level they would like to achieve at can be very motivating. Some teachers add an element of gamification to this which provides additional fun and motivation for students. Here is an example of a game board pacing chart http://bit.ly/gameboardtracking

  2. I am having a difficult time having the sped. students in my class work independently. I love these students, however they require a lot of support. Any suggestions?

I will try making flipped instructions to assist the students in knowing what is expected of them during blended learning.

  4. Hi Patti, Make sure you have a self-help routine that you have taught, practiced/role-played and have anchor charts or other visual to help them as they work independently. Here is an example of some independent learning strategies a 3rd grade teacher I know has used before. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByQELWipy3ypZWpNNGxfRkxXdVE/view
She also had these printed on laminated cards at independent learning stations. Here is a copy of the card set https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YtpWDI1TP15fRGHHMGjZNYz672DSrJb46iZbM4Ciks0/edit?usp=sharing This takes a time investment on the front end but pays off with consistent reinforcing. This is a list of independent learning skills I have created that may need to be explicitly taught/practiced depending on age of students. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xM69Ct-d7u8d2nSCTxLzauucepZF86AJ/view

Your "Apply" task was to create a digital assessment tool with students and analyze the results to determine who needed further instruction and who was ready to move on. Tell about the assessment you created and how it informed your next steps for instruction. What might you do differently?
